What do an ice bath and unpleasant emotions have in common?
It is uncomfortable.
You may feel tension.
Resistance.
Fear.
Maybe even panic.
And what if this is not so different from the moment when an unpleasant feeling or emotion arises in you?
What would it be like to stay with it just a little longer?
Not run away.
Not suppress it.
Not explain it away.
Just allow it to be there for a moment.
When I ask clients what they usually do when an unpleasant feeling or emotion appears, I very often hear:
"I try not to think about it."
"I want it to pass as quickly as possible."
"I would rather keep myself busy with something else."
And I completely understand that.
This is exactly what most of us have learned to do.
But what if it is not the unpleasant feeling itself that exhausts us the most?
What if it is the struggle with it?
People often think that if they allow themselves to really feel an unpleasant emotion, it will overwhelm them.
But when I ask them after a session what it was like, they very often say:
"I thought it would be much worse."
"For the first time, I didn't have to push the feeling away."
"I feel much lighter."
"Suddenly, there is calm."
"It is as if the problem had never been there before. I don't understand what I was struggling with or why it bothered me so much."
This is what we work with in BeTrue.
It is not about intensifying unpleasant emotions.
It is about no longer having to run away from them.
In a safe space, a person learns to stay with what they are experiencing.
At their own pace.
Without struggle.
And this is often when something very important begins to happen.
A person does not only discover that they can bear an unpleasant feeling.
They discover that the feeling is not their enemy.
So maybe the biggest problem is not your unpleasant emotions.
Maybe it is the fear of what would happen if you really allowed yourself to feel them.
And to me, that is something completely different.
Maybe the greatest relief does not come when an unpleasant feeling disappears. Maybe relief comes when you allow that feeling to move through you fully for the first time. Because often, what comes afterwards is not more pain.
It is calm.
